Chew Magna Baptist Church Hall, Tunbridge Road
Open forum agenda - updates from the practice to include progress with the new building.

Since November 2006 Chew Medical Practice has established a Patient Participation Group. The group provides an excellent opportunity for patients from the local community to get involved with what is happening at their local Surgery.

What is a patient Participation Group?

A selection of patients and practice staff, that meet at regular intervals to decide ways of making a positive contribution to the services and facilities offered by the practice to the patients in the local community.

Purpose of Patient Participation Groups

  • To provide the means for patients to make positive suggestions about the Practice and their own healthcare.

  • To encourage health education activities within the Practice.

  • To develop self-help projects to meet the needs of fellow patients.

  • To act as a representative group that can be call upon to influence the local provision of Health and Social Care.

  • To involve further patients from the wider population.

The Patient Participation Group will be an invaluable contribution to the strategic direction of Chew Magna Surgery and the services it can offer the local and wider communities in which it operates.

Once the Practice has an established Patient Group we aim to become members of NAPP.

National Association for Patient Participation
Website: www.napp.org.uk

N.A.P.P. supports the aims of the Alma Ata Declaration that includes the statement: "The people have the right and duty to participate individually and collectively in the planning and implementation of their health care."

N.A.P.P. objectives include the following:

  • To promote self help as a process to enable patients to develop a mutual interest in their primary health care at the surgery.
  • To provide effective grass roots forums in the community for patients, carers and health service staff which will have benefits for all.
  • To maintain a volunteer network of regional officers and committee in their efforts to bring to group practices and clinics the know-how in setting up local Patient Participation Groups in their locality.
  • To recognise the need for greater use of resources and time to help the areas of social deprivation where it is harder for patients to respond or react or become involved in patient- centred activities.
  • To work closely with the Department of health in its Health of the Nation strategy.
  • To devise and collate information packs which are of mutual interest to patient groups.

N.A.P.P. aims include the following:

  • To see a patient participation group in every GP practice and that each group is based on the mutual interests of the Primary Care Team and Patients of the practice.

  • To promote the role of Patient Participation Groups as participants in decision making within the NHS.

  • To maximise the benefit of sharing common interests while recognising the individual nature of groups and the differing structures in the devolved countries of the United Kingdom.

  • N.A.P.P. has regular contact with statutory and voluntary agencies concerned with health and in particular with patients' views and interests.
