Travel consultations have previously been carried out within normal surgery hours at no cost to the patient. Travel health is not an area that is funded by the NHS and due to the ongoing popularity of foreign travel, we are no longer able to provide this service free of charge.
About Chews2Travel
The staff at Chew Medical Practice are committed to providing high standards of care to its patients. We are delighted to be able to extend our care in travel health by running a designated travel clinic Chews2Travel. The clinic which is open on a Saturday morning is open to the general public, this means that you do not have to be registered at the surgery.
Travel abroad continues to be popular due to a number of reasons. Travelling is common for business purposes as well as travelling to visit friends or relatives and just simply for pleasure. It is estimated that 50% of British travellers do not seek adequate travel advice, take out necessary travel insurance or research the area they are visiting.
Travellers will have an individual travel health consultation which will focus on numerous travel aspects to help the traveller to gain greater understanding of the importance of safe travel to their chosen destination. We will not carry out vaccinations without a full individual risk assessment first, which will be based on information provided by yourself concerning the destination, activities to be undertaken, previous and existing health history.
It is useful to complete this Travel Risk Assessment form in advance and bring it with you to your travel consultation. A copy of the Travel Risk Assessment form can be downloaded here.
The travel clinic is a member of the British Travel health association and will be run by trained nurses who have a keen interest in travel and who have attended numerous training sessions concerning travel health. The nurses work to update any relevant clinical protocols concerning all areas of travel assessment and needs. They have access to update travel information via database systems. They are competent and experienced at undertaking travel risk assessments and consultations. Dr Tim Sephton is the GP lead for this and has had a keen interest in travel health for many years as well as enjoying travel and being an experienced traveller himself.
We can help you to reduce the problems associated with travel as many of the problems experienced are avoidable with good knowledge and taking the necessary precautions.
